Our History

From humble beginnings serving German-speaking immigrants to a thriving ELCIC congregation today.

1859

The Beginning

Lutheran services begin in Stratford, Ontario, serving the growing community of German-speaking immigrants who had settled in Perth County. These early gatherings planted the seeds of faith that would grow into a lasting congregation.

1863

First Chapel

A modest wooden frame chapel is built on Brunswick Street, providing the young congregation with their first dedicated place of worship. The chapel becomes a spiritual home for families across Stratford.

1874

New Brick Church

A beautiful new brick church is dedicated on Cambria Street, reflecting the congregation's growth and deepening roots in the community. The building stands as a testament to the faith of its founders.

1879

Synodical Connection

The congregation joins the Canada District of the Evangelical Lutheran Synod of Missouri, Ohio, and Other States, establishing a strong denominational affiliation that shapes its theological identity.

1908

Move to Erie Street

Zion Lutheran Church relocates to its current home at 208 Erie Street, where it has remained for over a century. The new location places the church at the heart of Stratford's vibrant community.

1911

Growth & Expansion

The congregation continues to grow and expand its ministries, serving the wider Stratford community through worship, education, and outreach programs for all ages.

1988

Endowment Fund

The Zion Endowment Fund is established, ensuring sustainable support for the congregation, the ELCIC Eastern Synod, and various charitable organizations including Canadian Lutheran World Relief.
